Summer activities for adult ESL

Are you looking for some fun summer activities for adult ESL students?

Many students take the summer off from school. However, adult ESL students (and teachers) may not have that luxury! I know that I’ll be teaching full time this summer starting July 5th.

If you are looking for some fabulous summer-themed activities, I’ve got you covered. Here’s a list of fun activities your students will love.

Research Local Summer Events & Activities

Have students go on a virtual scavenger hunt! They can go online and research events, activities, concerts, kids’ activities, and classes that are happening locally this summer. Then they can share what they’ve found and compile a list. This will likely inspire them to go out and practice their English skills with people in their community.

What Will You Bring?

Put students into groups and have them brainstorm a list of items to bring for a camping trip. This can lead to a discussion on summer hazards such as sunburns, heatstroke, dehydration, drowning, insect bites, poisonous plants, dangerous animals, etc. What should they bring to prepare for these possible hazards? Depending on their level, students will learn some useful vocabulary.

Teach Summer Idioms

Teach some common, summer-themed idioms! Here are a few:

– A ray of sunshine

– Dog days of summer

– Indian summer

– Off the deep end

– A place in the sun

– To swim against the tide

– A summer fling

Writing About Summer Activities

Students can write about and/or discuss their favorite summertime activities. They can explain why they enjoy these activities and share fun memories. They can also compare and contrast common activities from their countries.

Teach a Gerunds Grammar Lesson

You can teach a grammar lesson on gerunds and include summer activities such as hiking, swimming, mountain biking, rock climbing, and water skiing, tubing, boating, sailing, kayaking, and camping. If you are unsure about how to teach gerunds, check out this no-prep gerunds grammar lesson.

Inject some fun into your classes with these summer activities for adult ESL!
