Many countries recognize Christmas as an official public holiday, while others observe it in a symbolic way rather than as an official holiday. Either way, chances are the students in your class will know a lot about this holiday and how it is celebrated in different parts of the world. They may not know some of the American Christmas traditions or the origins of Christmas icons such as Santa Claus and Christmas trees. In fact, many Americans (like me) don’t know the history either.

Similarly, New Year’s celebrations and traditions can vary vastly between countries.

Here are some fun activities that you can use in your class to celebrate the season.

Christmas Traditions around the World

– Have students do independent research on two countries that celebrate Christmas. Then have them fill out a Venn diagram about the similarities and differences in traditions and share with the class. This could also be a compare/contrast paragraph or essay assignment.

– If your students are from different countries, they can prepare a presentation on the Christmas/New Year’s traditions in their country. They can also include traditions from their specific town or family.

Christmas Symbols Activities

Teach students about these common Christmas symbols and their origins. Have them add to the list!

– Christmas trees

– Santa Claus

– Mistletoe

– Holly

– Wreaths

– Red and green

Christmas Music

Share some Christmas carols! Bring in the lyrics and have a sing-along. Students can share Christmas music from their countries.

Local Holiday Events

Bring in a list or share a website of local Christmas events. Better yet, take them on a field trip to a holiday bazaar, a Christmas tree lighting event, or to look at Christmas decorations somewhere fun.

New Year’s Resolutions

Here are some discussion and research topics about New Year’s Resolutions:

– What is a New Year’s resolution?

– Why do people make them?

– Are New Year’s resolutions common in your country?

– Google “Best New Year’s Resolution Ideas” and discuss the list. Are these good resolutions? Why or why not?

– Many people don’t achieve their New Year’s resolutions. Why is this?

– What is your New Year’s resolution?
